The short answer
For a blanket you want to wash and color again, use the 24 included markers: water-based ink, 24 colors, washable according to the manufacturer. For a blanket you want to keep exactly as it is, use permanent fabric markers. Decide what you want from the blanket first, then pick the marker.
The 24 markers in the box
Every blanket comes with a full set, so there is nothing to buy before you start. The ink is water-based. According to the manufacturer, the ink washes out in a regular machine wash, which is why the same design can be colored again and again.
We have not measured how much of the blanket one set covers. It depends on the design and on how much background you fill.
When permanent fabric markers make sense
Our permanent fabric markers are an option at $9.99 per blanket. The manufacturer describes them as permanent and waterproof: the opposite of the washable set. Choose them for a blanket you want to keep, like a gift you colored yourself.
They are not a refill. If you color a section with them, do not expect it to wash out.
Can you use markers you already have?
We have not tested other brands on this blanket, so we cannot tell you how they will behave in the wash. Before you use your own, check three things on the label:
- Is it made for fabric, or for paper?
- Does it say washable, or permanent?
- Does it need any extra step, such as heat, to work on fabric?
If the label does not answer, test it on a small corner you do not mind keeping colored.
How to avoid mixing inks
Keep the washable set and any other markers in separate pouches. In a shared project, agree before you start which set everyone uses. Mixing up the sets is the easiest way to end up with color that will not wash out.
When a favorite color runs out
We do not sell a refill of the washable set at the moment. Use a neighboring shade, leave that area white, or turn it into a pattern of two colors. Need to know more about washing? Read how to wash a coloring blanket.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use regular washable markers on a coloring blanket?
We have not tested them, so we cannot say how they wash out of this fabric. The 24 markers in the box are the ones meant for it.
Are the included markers fabric markers?
Yes. They are 24 fabric markers with water-based ink, washable according to the manufacturer.
Can I mix permanent and washable markers on one blanket?
You can, but the permanent sections should not be expected to wash out. Plan which areas get which ink.
Do you sell a refill of the washable markers?
Not at the moment. Our permanent fabric markers do a different job and are not a refill.
