Can you wash a coloring blanket?

Yes. The blanket is made to be colored, washed and colored again. According to the manufacturer, the ink washes out in a regular machine wash. The printed line art stays on the fabric; what goes away is the color you added with the 24 included markers.

We have not washed one ourselves yet. Everything on this page about washing comes from the manufacturer, and we say so each time.

How to wash it in 5 steps

  1. Check the markers. Make sure the whole design was colored with the 24 washable markers from the box, not with permanent or household markers.
  2. Take a photo. If you like what you made, photograph it before it goes in the machine.
  3. Read the care label. Use the instructions that come with your blanket for temperature and cycle. The online listing does not give them.
  4. Run a regular machine wash. According to the manufacturer, the ink washes out in a regular machine wash.
  5. Check before you recolor. Let it dry as the care label says, look it over, then pick a new palette.

What happens to the colors

The manufacturer says the ink washes out in a regular machine wash. It does not say whether every shade disappears in a single cycle, and we have not measured it. If a little color remains, you can wash it again or simply color over it with the next palette.

We do not promise a number of washes the blanket can take. Nobody has published one for this product, and we will not make one up.

Temperature, dryer, iron: what is not stated

The listing gives no water temperature, no tumble-dryer setting and no ironing advice. Follow the care label of the blanket you receive. If it is missing or unclear, email us before washing and we will ask the supplier.

Do not try to "set" washable ink with an iron to make it permanent. Nothing in the product information says that works. For colors that stay, the permanent markers are the right tool.

Washable and permanent ink on the same blanket

If part of the design was colored with permanent fabric markers, do not expect that part to wash out with the rest. That is the point of permanent ink. Keep the two sets apart, and read more on our fabric markers page.

Ready to color it again

Same outlines, new colors. Try the palette you skipped last time, hand the markers to someone else, or leave more of the design blank this round. Need ideas on what to use? Read which markers to use on a coloring blanket.
